ICO Concerts in Limerick in March and April

University Concert Hall, Limerick

Anthony Marwood’s programme delves deep into the 17th and 18th centuries and goes full circle to the 21st century with an Irish world première……

Acclaimed Artistic Director Anthony Marwood makes his first appearance of 2010 with the Irish Chamber Orchestra fresh from his Carnegie Hall dèbut (with Thomas Adès and Steven Isserlis).     He is recognised as one of the most exciting violinist-directors working today, in increasing demand across Europe, America and beyond.

Marwood directs the ICO in a diverse programme that visits Louis XIV’s Versailles, where Lully wrote his memorable Ballet suite and Salzburg where Mozart composed his timeless violin concerti. He unveils a world première by Irish composer, Andrew Hamilton, commissioned by the Irish Chamber Orchestra, followed by Schubert’s powerful Fifth Symphony.

Lully dominated the musical life of Louis XIV’s court. He wrote the music for the dances that the king and his courtiers performed, and was also instrumental turning Ballet from a participatory event to professional art form . Le Triomphe de l’Amour, written for the wedding of the Dauphin in 1680, gave birth to the ballerina – it was the first ballet to feature professional female dancers.

Mozart was a nineteen-year-old teenager when he composed his scintillating Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major, K. 218, although a veteran of the European stage and a star in his home of Salzburg  Its beautiful classical themes and orchestrations make it a magnificent showcase for virtuoso violinist, Anthony Marwood.
Schubert  was also just nineteen when he composed his charming Symphony No.5, but he hadn’t yet found fame. The symphony was written in a burst of teenage inspiration known as ‘the miracle years’ which also produced hundreds of songs, masses, operas, and five symphonies. The fifth symphony shows the emergence of Schubert’s genius.
The Institute of Failure and Power by Andrew Hamilton – a world première from the Irish Chamber Orchestra – is fresh and exciting new work. Hamilton is a former winner of the Macaulay Fellowship, awarded by the Arts Council of Ireland (An Chomhairle Ealaíon), who have also funded this commission.  Inspired by Robert Walser’s novel Jakob von Gunten, Hamilton says  “The phrase heard at the beginning is added to, elaborated and interrupted as though the musicians are trying to find a way to get out”.
The concert promises to be a relaxing and enjoyable way to celebrate the arrival of Spring-time in the company of Anthony Marwood & the Irish Chamber Orchestra.
