Parks and Open Spaces

Parks

There are 350 acres approx. of public open space in Limerick City, some of this land is actively maintained as public parkland and other areas are being developed e.g. as urban forestry and as wildlife sanctuaries. Limerick City Council maintains eight public parks listed above.

Floral Displays

The Parks Service produces thousands of bedding plants annually for civic decoration. These are planted in our public parks, street containers, hanging baskets and on roundabouts. As part of the City Council's City Enhancement Programme, a "Bridges in Bloom" project commenced in 2003. Hanging baskets were placed on four of the city's bridges: Sarsfield Bridge, Thomond Bridge, Mathew Bridge and Baal's Bridge.

Tree Planting

The Council has been involved in developing woodlands in the urban environment for many years and has an annual tree planting programme for the city. Trees are planted in parks, cemeteries, along main roads, on roundabouts etc. Planting is carried out annually between December and March, with pruning also carried out at this time to improve the longevity and safety of the trees.

Two examples of urban forestry in the city are the Baggott estate in Ballinacurra and the Children's Oak Wood at Shannon Fields, Corbally. The latter dates from 1991/1992, when the City Council planted trees to represent the children born in the city during 1991, Treaty 300 Year.

It is intended to increase access to, and usage of, our urban forestry through the establishment of pathways and appropriate signage.

Riverside Walks

The River Shannon flows through Limerick City and is a wonderful amenity for citizens and visitors alike. There are a number of very pleasant riverside walks available, some of which are maintained by the City Council.

Walks include:

  • The City Centre, by the Shannon and Abbey Rivers
  • Balllinacurra/Roundwood, by the Ballynaclough River
  • Corbally Walks Canal Banks Rhebogue
  • Westfields, North Circular Road

Further information on these walks available locally.

Children's Playgrounds

There are currently two playgrounds maintained by the Council in Limerick City.

The playground in the People's Park is a state of the art playground which opened in July 2001, and has a range of equipment which provides play opportunities for children up to 10/12 years of age.
