La Muse Writers' & Artists' Retreat Newsletter
2007 was a pivotal year for La Muse. We made a number of changes to better accommodate a greater variety of writers and artists, and launched several initiatives to nurture our growing creative community.
New this year: A separate space in the house for Internet access; an art studio; village houses for families; shorter retreats and more flexible dates. We will also offer a number of residencies in 2008, our first ever! Read on…
1. We now have a blog (http://lamusewritersandartistsretreat.blogspot.com) and a new website (www.lamuseinn.com) with loads of new pages and...
2. Links. If your website isn't on our new "Links" page please just send us your web address and John will upload it. Also, please ask your webmaster to put a link to La Muse on your website. It’s a great way to spread the word about us. Thanks!
3. We now offer fellowships and residencies (www.lamuseinn.com/fellowship.shtml). Please let people know about them. We plan to add more every year.
4. There have been a LOT of changes to La Muse (www.lamuseinn.com/renovations.shtml): new slate roof, new dining room, two new kitchens, new attendee entrance, and an expanded library collection.
5. Now that Labastide Esparbairenque has DSL, La Muse now offers broadband WIFI access after "quiet hours."
6. Donate a muse to an artist! La Muse now has a non-profit arm (www.lamuseinn.com/donate.shtml) to broaden our residency offerings. Contact us to inquire about muse sponsorships and artist “adoptions”.
7. For years we have been booked a year in advance. Now that we have more space with the village houses, we sometimes have last-minute availability and offer discounts for acceptances made less than one month in advance.
Thanks to the La Muse writers and artists who gave us a month of their creative life in 2007, making another year possible for La Muse.
See you here soon,
All the best,
John and Kerry

Sundance Institute Theatre Lab , Utah , USA (Deadline: Dec 15)
Sundance Institute Theatre Program is open for applications for 2008 Theatre Lab. Playwrights, directors, composers or choreographers may submit applications.
More information: Sundance Institute - look at 'Explore Programs - Theatre' and check any nationality/residency/language requirements before you apply.
The Theatre Program welcomes applications for projects at any stage of development, but focuses on work that is ready to be explored, at least in part, on its feet. New in 2008, submitted work cannot have been previously produced, but may have received prior workshops. In addition, projects scheduled to receive a production before October 25, 2008, are not eligible.
Playwrights, directors, composers or choreographers may submit applications. Playwright/director teams are encouraged to apply together; however, if you do not have a director attached to your project, please note that Sundance will help to match you up with a director once your play is selected for inclusion in the Lab. Many younger playwrights do not have access to a director and Sundance is positioned to match these artists with an experienced director. In the case of projects that are not strictly text-based (dance/theatre pieces, image-based work), an artistic statement detailing the style and vision of the piece is essential.
Sundance is interested in both established and emerging theatre artists, as well as artists making a transition from areas outside of theatre. We welcome solo performers and projects for young audiences. Participants must be available for the entire length of the Lab. Artists can only submit one application. Previous applicants may re-apply. Contracted commissions or producers do not affect the selection of projects for the Theatre Lab. Applicants can only submit one application each year.
The Sundance Institute prides itself on its family-friendly environment. However, please be aware that the Sundance Resort is on a mountain and presents challenges for families with young children. We strongly encourage families with children under age seven to consider alternative childcare at home during the Lab. A three-day guest policy is in effect for all other adult visitors. Each guest is responsible for expenses incurred during their visit. Please contact the Theatre Program if you have questions about families or guests.
PROJECT SELECTION
The Sundance Institute Theatre Lab selects up to eight projects per year. Through open submissions, we consider an estimated 700 projects. Sundance looks for original, compelling, human stories that reflect the independent vision of the theatre artist. We are interested in supporting a diverse and daring group of theatre artists who tell unique stories, present material in a new form, or conceptualize existing material with an innovative directorial vision. We look for writers and collaborators who are interested in genuinely exploring their material. Sundance is more than a place to 'rehearse'; it is an environment that encourages and supports risk-taking, experimentation, and rigorous re-writing and re-imagining.
PROJECT SUPPORT
The Sundance Institute Theatre Lab provides professional actors, dramaturgs, rehearsal space, stage management, round-trip air transportation, accommodations, and meals for the collaborative team working on each project. Each full-time Fellow (playwright, director, other collaborator) receives a $500 honorarium. Actors operate on a Special Agreement with Actors Equity Association during the Theatre Lab.
GIVING BACK
Sundance Institute was founded by Robert Redford as a way to give back, to support other film and theatre artists by providing them with an opportunity to develop their projects and skills. Sundance proudly does not accept royalties on projects supported by the Theatre Program. Playwrights own their work fully, but are requested to publish Sundance Institute's logo, bio and credit [Title of Project] was developed, in part, with assistance from the Sundance Institute Theatre Program on the title page of all printed materials of future readings, workshops, productions, recordings and publications of their projects, and include a click-back widget on each successive producer's website. Please call the Theatre Program with any questions.

Roscommon County Arts Office Seeks Artists For Artists In Schools Scheme 2008
The Artists in Schools scheme funds an artist to work in a primary school for 50 hours contact time at a rate of €40/hr and an additional 5hrs development time at the same rate. The total fee is €2,200 which will be paid in two instalments by the Arts Office at the commencement and completion of the project
This year the structure of the programme has been greatly altered. We are aware that previously a lot of time and effort went into making an application and while these applications were often of a very high standard, we could only award a small number of residencies with the result of disappointing a large number of schools and artists who had put a lot of work into their applications.
This year, we are asking schools to simply register their interest in the scheme. We are then asking suitably experienced artists to apply to the arts office after which a shortlist of artists will be invited to attend interview so we can match artists' skills to schools needs.
A special facilitated planning afternoon (part of the 5hr development time) designed to involve schools more fully in the planning process will take place in early February and successful artists and schools will be required to attend this meeting.
We are looking for artists who have experience in delivering high quality arts experiences for children and young people and who are interested in working collaboratively with the selected school.
If you are interested in working on this scheme, please apply in writing and include the following –
1. CV of relevant experience
2. Two referees
3. A copy of your HSE approved Keeping Safe certificate (if you hold one)
4. Distance you are willing to travel to a selected school
Interviews will take place in January and the planning day with artists and teachers will take place in early February. Projects can be planned for the last school term Easter-Summer 2008, or anytime between September and Christmas 2008.
Applications marked "Artists in Schools Scheme" should be sent to Roscommon County Arts Office, Courthouse, Roscommon by 4pm on Wednesday, 12th December. For further information please contact Avril Carr on 0906632541 or accarr@roscommoncoco.ie
