This selected group of artists represents a diverse range from the most distinguished established artists, to the fresh and cutting edge. Presence shows the extent and diversity of Irish contemporary art, juxtaposing contemporary painting with drawing and photographic media.
Presence gives Limerick audiences the opportunity to enjoy the newest work by these prominent artists, just in time for the Christmas season! Presence is the first of a trilogy of annual Christmas exhibitions.
Painting is well represented in Presence through many styles and approaches. Limerick has a consistent reputation of producing many fine painters; Presence presents an indicative range of the diversity of this group. Following the strong tradition of Irish landscape painting, the coastline and landscape of the mid west appear in Presence in many guises. Also included in the selection are intimate photographic portraits and exquisite drawings.

The Divine Comedy - Samuel Walsh
November 3rd to December 21st
Limerick City Gallery of Art presents a large scale exhibition of new paintings by Samuel Walsh. This exhibition which shows in its entirety an ambitious body of work based on Dante Aligheri’s masterwork The Divine Comedy The epic series, begun in Pont-Aven in France in 2002, mirrors Dante’s journey of three phases – Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Walsh’s interpretation of the first book of The Divine Comedy; The Inferno, comprises 34 paintings relating to the book’s 34 Cantos, The Purgatorio inspired seven Cornice paintings, each relating to the journey that Dante and Virgil make as they ascend Purgatory and visit the seven cornices that parallel the seven deadly sins. The series is completed by one large, multi-part
painting based on the Paradiso, the third and final book of the Divine Comedy, where Dante visits Paradise.
This series has grown from a fascination with Dante’s Inferno and has not followed Walsh’s previous work practice. Feeling his language of expression, in the form of abstraction, did not lend itself to compose symbolic ideas of things and people, Walsh adopted a new bold representational approach to this body of work.
The exhibition is accompanied by a full catalogue publication.
