Limerick City Council oversees a range of sporting facilities. These facilities are aimed at providing opportunities for recreation for all, and charges, where applicable, are constructed to avoid exclusion.

Swimming Pools

The Council is represented on the Board of Management of the complex and provides an annual financial contribution towards its running costs. Facilities available to the public include a 25m swimming pool, sauna, gymnasium, keep fit classes/dance studio and tennis courts.

Pitches

There are some 30 playing pitches throughout the city which are provided for use to the various sporting organisations, e.g. for rugby, soccer and gaelic games.

Golf

Rathbane Golf Course

Rathbane Golf Course is a new parkland course, built on 125 acres, with modern sand-based greens. It is situated within the city suburbs, with panoramic views of the local countryside. This is Limerick's first municipal golf course with "pay as you play" in operation. A management company currently operates the course on behalf of the City Council. Players can avail of professional tuition and motorised caddy-hire at the golf course.

Rathbane Golf Club was awarded the provincial title “Munster Club of the Year” in 2005 by the Golfing Union of Ireland. This award was in recognition of improvements to the course and the commitment of both the management and the club to Junior golf (Rathbane is affiliated to “The First Tee” junior golf programme).

Limerick City Sports Partnership was launched in November 2002 and is one of 12 Local Sports Partnerships in Ireland. The Local Sports Partnership initiative was established by the Irish Sports Council in order to create a national structure to coordinate, promote and help to deliver sporting and physical activity opportunities at the local level. The Partnership is a limited company with a representative Board of Directors, including representation from the City Council. The vision of the Limerick City Sports Partnership is:

Encourage increases in levels of participation in sport and physical activity within Limerick City, especially amongst specific target groups such as older people, girls and women, people with disabilities, unemployed people and those who live in identified disadvantaged communities.

Limerick City Sports Partnership will focus on five key areas to coordinate sport and physical activity. These are set out in the Partnerships Strategic Plan 2003-2008, due for launch in February 2004: Young People; Active Limerick; Voluntary, Education & Training; Infrastructure & Environment; and Information & Promotion.

Limerick and Environs Sports & Recreation Policy Framework Plan 

A recreational needs study has been undertaken by Cunnane Stratton Reynolds, Town Planning & Landscape Architecture, Dublin.

The study area covers Limerick City and extends into Counties Limerick, Clare and Tipperary.

The purpose of the study is to assess existing facilities and current demands, consult with various bodies on requirements, assess future needs and identify the mechanism for provision, through policies and actions, for future active and passive recreation provision and management. The study will result in a strategic action plan covering ten years, with three/five year targets.
