Introduction
Parking is a major function of the traffic section and is responsible for the control of on-street parking. Disc parking is the system of control on the streets and is widely regarded as an efficient and flexible system. The traffic section also carries out regular traffic and parking surveys in order to identify trends for forward planning and transportation measures.
The administration of traffic enforcement and parking control is operated within City Hall. The pay-parking section is responsible for management of the City Council’s off-street car parks and enforcement of parking bye-laws on the city’s streets. A system of disc parking is in place in the city centre streets.
In accordance with the objectives set out in Limerick’s Road Safety Together Plan traffic calming schemes are introduced and improvements made. Public consultation and detailed discussion with the members of the City Council are carried out prior to the implementation of these schemes. A firm of consulting engineers were engaged to prepare a traffic management study for the city. This report which has received approval in principle from the City Council is being used to support improved traffic arrangements in the city. Limerick City Council is working closely with Bus Eireann in the development of bus and cycle priority measures for the city.
