Road Construction/Design/Maintenance
The Roads Department of Limerick City Council works closely with the National Roads Authority and the Department of the Environment and Local Government who have the overall responsibility for the national road network and the non-national road network respectively. The Roads Department provides for the maintenance and improvement of national and non-national roads.
National Roads
Limerick City Council has recently completed construction of the Northern Relief Road running from the borough boundary at Caherdavin to the Dublin Road and including a new crossing of the Abbey River via the Abbey Bridge. Improvement works on Thomond Bridge will form the last remaining part of the Northern Relief Road Scheme.
Work has recently been completed on the development of a four-lane road from the Parkway Roundabout to Plassey Road Roundabout. Limerick City Council in association with Clare County Council and Limerick County Council (the lead authority) are working closely with the National Roads Authority in the development of a Southern Ring Road for Limerick including a new downstream crossing of the Shannon River. It is expected that this scheme will be operational by 2008.
Non-national Roads
Limerick City Council has received funding from the Department of the Environment and Local Government for the construction of phase 2 of the Corbally Link Road, which also includes a canal bridge.
This road has been an objective of the Limerick City Development Plan for many years. An annual programme of works is prepared each year for regional and non-national roads.
Phase 1 of the City Centre Strategy is currently underway. This will lead to enhanced street-scapes by way of public lighting, improved footpath surfaces, carriageways and increased pedestrian priority areas in the city. Phase 1 comprises Baker Place, Thomas Street, Bedford Row and Catherine Street.
