Dockers Monument
Dockers Monument - Limerick City gets a new work of Public Art
This sculpture was commissioned by Limerick City Council and funded by The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government under The Limerick Main Drainage Percent for Art Scheme
A booklet, written by Dr. Matthew Potter on the history of the port and the dockers was published to coincide with the unveiling and is available as a PDF below.
Limerick City Council has commissioned a work of public art to commemorate in a permanent way the contribution the Limerick Dockers made to the cultural and economic life of the city. The commission was administered in two stages and the first call for expression of interest elicited thirty eight responses. From these thirty eight responses, Limerick City Council invited 9 artists to submit a more detailed idea of their proposal.
It is fitting that Limerick born artist Michael Duhan was selected to make a permanent tribute to the Limerick Dockers, as his father was a docker and worked on ships. The dockers performed one of the most difficult and challenging ways to earn a living in the City. This life size bronze sculpture reflects with honesty and integrity the physical work and the camaraderie that existed between the Dockers
Cllr Kevin Keily, Mayor of Limerick, says ‘I am delighted to be celebrating and remembering the lives of the Dockers and hope that the public and future generations will enjoy and engage with the Dockers Monument on the Quays of Limerick.
The life size bronze statue will be unveiled by the Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Kevin Keily on Friday 18th June at 11am on Spokane Walk, opposite Bishop’s Quay.
