Christmas shoppers visiting Limerick City can avail of 3000 free on-street spaces from this Friday 3rd December .

Under a scheme announced by Limerick City Council today (Monday), on-street parking will be FREE on all Friday and Saturday afternoons between 2pm and 5.30pm from Friday December 3rd to Thursday 30th December inclusive.

This means there will be 3000 on street parking spaces free for shoppers to use from 2pm on Friday afternoons and a further 1044 on-street parking spaces free to use on Saturday afternoons from 2pm. On-street parking in Limerick city is always free on Sundays.

Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Maria Byrne said that Limerick city centre is a perfect place for Christmas shopping and Limerick City Council wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to spend time in the city.

“Building on the success of the recent shopping and dining in Limerick promotional events and after meetings with local traders, we decided to go ahead with this Christmas parking initiative,” she said.

In addition, Limerick city with its Park by phone contractor ParkMagic are also launching a December 2010 parking promotion. ParkMagic, who currently cater for in excess of 12000 parking customers in Limerick, will with Limerick City Council make available €10 parking credit to all new customers who sign up to ParkMagic in December. The normal parking credit assigned to new ParkMagic customers is €5. This is a great opportunity to experience the comfort and cost efficiency of parking by phone in Limerick where short stay parking for 30 minutes is available for 50 cent.

“It’s important to note that certain designated areas of Limerick city have free on-street parking all day on Saturdays and on street parking in Limerick city is always free on Sundays. With a wonderful display of festive lights and the perfect mix of traditional and new businesses, you can’t beat Limerick city centre for shopping this Christmas,” she added.

Disc parking areas are recognisable by the thin white line on the road and by the red and white parking signs on the footpaths with information plates about parking times and freephone numbers for ParkMagic.

Currently Limerick City Council makes available 2000 free to use spaces each Saturday all year round.
