The City is strategically located on the national primary road network, with Ennis and Galway on the N18 being 37km and 104km respectively to the North-West; Cork, on the N20, is 100km to the South; Killarney, on the N21/23, is 108km to the South-West, and Nenagh and Dublin on the N7, are 37km and 200km to the North-East. Shannon International Airport, Ireland's transatlantic airport, is just 21km west of Limerick City on the N18. 

A comprehensive network of secondary roads links Limerick with other centres of population throughout the country. The country's railway network links Limerick to all the major centres of population and cargo ports.Limerick City is the capital of the Shannon Region with a population of nearly 400,000, and is a centre of administration, industry, commerce and tourism. 
The city is the successful home of numerous multinational and indigenous manufacturing firms, including Dell, Howmedica International, Krups Engineering, Verbatim, Johnson & Johnson and Analog Devices.

The first food processing centre in Ireland, this specialist centre was developed and constructed by Shannon Development in accordance with E.U. export licensing standards and the U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations. The Centre provides research and development facilities to industry, and has established links with technology institutes world-wide. 

The National Technological Park

This park comprises a 650 acre site on the banks of the River Shannon. With the University of Limerick at its core, the aim of the park is to create the appropriate physical, administrative and technological environment conducive to the growth of technology based enterprise. There are over 2,100 people employed in the park in over 80 separate organisations, combining multinational subsidiaries, Irish technology companies, R&D entities and support services. The park provides a range of flexible industrial and business accommodation options for eligible activities. Among the centres that such accommodation is available are The Innovation Centre, the International Business Centre, the International Science Centre and the Plassey Enterprise Centre.

Shannon Free Zone

The worlds first duty-free industrial zone - the Shannon Free Zone - was established in 1960, and since then has attracted both international services companies and manufacturers. Financial advantages of locating at Shannon serve as an incentive to companies considering a strategic location in Europe, including a low corporate tax rate of 10% and a comprehensive package of grants tailored to meet the needs of individual projects.

The Innovation Centre

The Innovation Centre is a core entity within the National Technological Park in stimulating/incubating/growing new Irish technology based entrepreneurship. Its flagship Entrepreneurs Programme is directed towards the development of strong venture teams with a balanced blend of business skills. The centre provides small-scale, incubation facilities and support services for start-up technology companies, as well as support services.

Since the 1940s, Shannon has been recognised as a leading innovator in the world of aviation. The Shannon World Aviation Park is located adjacent to Shannon International Airport and the Shannon Free Zone. Comprising 110 acres initially, the Park enjoys free-port status and is being developed in an integrated and planned manner, specifically to meet the needs of the aerospace industry.

The Tait and Workspace Business Centres
Initiated in Ireland by Shannon Development at Dominic Street and Michael Street, these centres provide start-up space for new businesses, in the form of workshops and offices. Each centre has shared central services such as reception facilities, secretarial services and meeting rooms.

Shannon Development is the Irish Government's Regional Development Agency responsible for the promotion and development of Ireland's Shannon Region. With its unique remit, Shannon Development can get involved in many different forms of economic activity in the Shannon Region - from promoting mediaeval banquets to supporting industry and tourism, to running a national technological park in Limerick.

Among the key objectives of the Limerick City Enterprise Board are the creation of local enterprise awareness; the promotion of job generation by developing indigenous potential and stimulating economic activity, primarily through the provision of financial and advisory support for viable small enterprises. 

Limerick/Shannon Chamber of Commerce

Incorporated in 1815, the Chamber has its head office in Limerick City, with a branch office in Shannon. Its membership comprises of some 450 companies in industry, trade, tourism, commerce and the professional services in the region for whom it promotes better business support systems and takes on specific initiatives to develop the local economic environment through a wide variety of industry and tourism related projects, as well as business information seminars, conferences and membership meetings. It is affiliated to Chambers of Commerce of Ireland and Eurochambers, and has extensive practical involvement with the Regional Chambres de Commerce et Industrie of Pays de la Loire in France.
