Control of Dogs

Under the Control of Dogs Act  and associated regulations which include the Dog Litter Control Bye Laws 2012 (49 Kb) every dog owner is responsible for ensuring that each of their dogs is:

  • licenced
  • identifiable - wears a collar with name & address of owner attached
  • under control at all times - note breed types listed under - dangerous dogs - must be on a lead at all times
  • when walking their dogs, owners must carry a receptacle for disposal of their dog litter
  • must be kept on a lead at all times when walking in public parks   

Dog Licences:

  • Cost €20.00 per dog
  • Are valid for 1 year
  • May be purchased from Limerick City Council Payments Office, Ground Floor City Hall, (open Mon - Fri 9.15 am -4.15 pm) or at all Post Offices
  • General Dog Licenses are available at a fee of €400.00 and covers a pack of 20 dogs or more for 12 months

Please advise us if your dog has died or is no longer in the household so that our database can be up-dated.

The income from dog licenses helps to fund the dog warden service in Limerick City.
