CONTROL OF HORSES ACT 1996
LIMERICK COUNTY BOROUGH (Control of Horses)
BYE-LAWS 1998

Horse owners are reminded of the requirements of the Control of Horses Act 1996 and the Limerick County Borough (Control of Horses) Bye-Laws 1998 in relation to the keeping of a horse. Limerick City Council will continue to enforce the above legislation within the functional area of the County Borough of Limerick which is a Control Area for the purposes of the Act and the Bye-Laws.

Any person keeping a horse within the Control Area must have the following:

  • (a) a horse licence
  • (b) suitable accommodation & land available for the horse
  • (c) the horse identified by means of a microelectronic device implant

A horse licence shall not apply in respect of a horse being brought into the Control Area for the purposes of a gymkhana, sale or showing of horses, or any event of an equine nature for which Limerick City Council has given prior written permission.

Application forms and the particulars required for a horse licence can be obtained from the Environment Department, Limerick City Council, City Hall, Limerick.

Any horse found within the Control Area without the necessary documentation will be seized and detained.
