Economic Development & Planning Directorate of Limerick City and County Council to Move to New Home

Limerick's Patrick Street will experience a significant investment and a new lease of life next week when it becomes home to a major new Directorate of Limerick City and County Council.

The Economic Development, Property and Planning Units are merging into one Directorate of the amalgamating Local Authority. The new Unit will open its doors next Monday, March 24th, 2014 in 7/8 Patrick Street in the heart of the city centre taking over the former AIB Bank premises.

A total of 55 staff will begin work in the Directorate with a further 12 staff joining over the next few weeks to bring the total to 67 by the end of May.

Renovations and fit out to the building are now complete. The staff move to Patrick Street will commence tomorrow, Wednesday March 19th, and will be complete on Friday March 21st. During this transition period, particularly on Friday March 21st, there will be disruptions to public services but online access to planning queries will not be affected. The full range of services will be available to the public in Patrick Street from Mon 24th.

Limerick City and County Council Director of Services for Economic Development and Planning, Oliver O'Loughlin said the location of the new Directorate will provide an enhanced experience for all customers and demonstrate the Council's commitment to the revitalisation of the city centre.

“The headquarters of the Economic Development and Planning Directorate will be based in our new premises in Patrick Street but planning services will still be available in
Merchants Quay and Dooradoyle through the Customer Services Units,” he said. “Overall, it's an increased level of service for the customer and an additional facility. It is a key part of our plan to re-develop the Patrick Street site since it was purchased by the local authority last year.”

Mr O'Loughlin said Limerick City and County Council is already in advanced discussions with the University of Limerick and Revenue on planned moves into the Patrick Street area and a number of short term lettings are in place providing a platform for the ongoing renewal of the locality.

“We have made significant progress in the Patrick Street and Ellen Street areas of the site since it has come into our ownership such as the opening of a new disc parking zone in Michael Street and the former Cahill May Roberts Building has been utilised by Limerick City Build Company on a short term basis,” he said. “Rutland Street has also become home to the UL School of Architecture's FabLab. Later in the year, Limerick Marketing Company, the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) and the Innovation Hub will also move into Patrick Street and I hope that these moves will be a catalyst for further developments in the area,” Mr O'Loughlin concluded.
