Monday, 23 February 2009

A former pupil of a Limerick school has won an Oscar at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles. Michael O'Connor took the gong for costume design on the film 'The Duchess' which stars Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes.

Michael grew up in the UK but attended school in St Fergus' National School in Glin and Tarbert Comprehensive during the 1970s. His parents, Thomas and Lania O'Connor had always wanted to return to live in Limerick during this time but economic conditions prevented them from doing so. Michael's other movie work includes Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Last King of Scotland, Brick Lane and Quills. After accepting his Oscar, he now returns to Afghanistan to work on a new production.

Meanwhile Limerick's Lesley Ann Halvey will perform at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. Lesley Ann, from Garryowen is a member of the band Black Daisy who along with singer Sinead Mulvey has been chosen to represent Ireland at the contest next May. Their song 'Et Cetera' beat off competition from six other entries on last Friday night's Late Late Show. The winning song was written by Niall Mooney, Jonas Gladnikoff, Daniele Moretti and Christina Schilling.
