Limerick set for biggest and best Pride 2009!

Festival brings a splash of colour to Limerick this September

 


Limerick is gearing up for its biggest and most entertaining Pride Festival to date with more than 3000 expected to flock to the city for the 2009 event.
The colourful and exciting line up was announced at the launch of Pride 2009 at Bentley Barkers in Limerick, today.

This year's Limerick Pride Festival runs from Sunday, September 13th to Sunday September 20th. 

 Limerick Pride Chairperson, Paddy Doyle, said the festival which is entering its third year is not just a gay event but a chance for everyone to celebrate diversity.

“Gay culture has really contributed to the life of Limerick through art, music, dance and pure energy,” he said. “Pride 2009 is a showcase of all these talents and we’re really confident that this year’s event will be the best yet. We’ve been getting a fantastic response from the business community in the city and hope that everyone enjoys the parade and shows their support for it as it is always really colourful and good fun,” he added.
Limerick Pride 2009 kicks off with a full calendar of events beginning with The Kylie Experience, a free gig in Bentleys Bar, O’Connell Street for the official launch of Pride on Sunday, September 13th. 
Mr Gay Limerick is taking place in Riddler’s Bar Thursday, September 17th and Ireland’s Eurovision entry Black Daisy featuring Limerick’s own Lesley Ann Halvey is headlining the annual mardi-gras party in Dolans Warehouse on Saturday, September 19th.
During Limerick Pride week Riddler’s Bar will be hosting film, art exhibitions and variety nights.  Bottomdog Theatre will be presenting Myles Breen in ‘Language unbecoming a Lady’, at the Belltable Arts Centre running from September 11th – 14th and not content to rest on his laurels, Myles is also hosting an unforgettable interactive Rocky Horror Show at Centrespace Studios, Alphonsus Street on Friday, September 18th.
The highlight of the week will be The Pride Parade from Pery Square from 1pm on Saturday, September 19th which will be followed by music, food, entertainment and fun at The Pride Block Party in Hartstonge Street from 2pm.
Garryowen girl, Lesley-Ann Halvey, singer with Eurovision stars Black Daisy said the band is delighted to be performing at this year’s Limerick Pride.
“It’s the first time the band has performed in Limerick since Eurovision and I’m really excited about playing my home town! We’re going to put on an unforgettable show,” Lesley-Ann promised.

Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Kevin Kiely, has congratulated the organisers on the line up for this year’s festival.
“As Mayor of Limerick I’m delighted to support the celebration of openness, diversity and fun that is Limerick Pride 2009 with its various events, especially the festival highlight, the Pride Street Parade,” he said. “It is my wish for Limerick to be an inclusive city that cherishes the many diverse communities living in the Mid-West.  Best wishes to all those attending the events and I wish them a happy and enjoyable Limerick Pride festival 2009.”
Limerick Pride is about Equality, Love, Diversity and Celebration and throughout the week there are several different events to provide more information from the LGBT community.
Marriage Equality will be holding a Q & A in Riddler’s Bar, Friday, September 18th at 8pm, Miss Sheila Fits-Patrick will host the debate between both sides on this volatile issue. This event is not one to be missed.
Limerick Pride Health Day is on Wednesday, September 16th in the Best Western Pery Hotel from 2pm-6pm. Rainbow Support Services has organised a health information day with a wide range of workshops covering different health issues that affect the community.  These workshops will be no longer than 45 minutes each.
Limerick Pride will be a week of celebration of the diversity of Limerick’s cultural life. All of these events are open to everyone in the city to show support for the community.
