It’s also a great way to  connect with friends and can benefit the community in so many ways.  Limerick had a great level of participation last year and we hope that the  academic year 2010-2011 can bring the same level of success if not more.’

Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Maria Byrne said she hopes Limerick people will enjoy the programme of events for European Mobility Week and take part in regular physical activity to maintain good health and reduce stress.

“Our lifestyles have become more inactive with increased car usage,” she pointed out. “Nevertheless, there are solutions, walking and cycling are sustainable ways of getting to work and school and there are low cost ways of getting around which gives you the added bonus of getting regular exercise. While helping yourself to better health and wellbeing, you are cutting your cost of living, reducing noise and pollution and helping make Limerick city a more please place to live, work, learn, shop and relax in.”

Another exciting initiative which will be launched during European Mobility Week is the Schools Fit Kidz Programme.

This walking programme has been developed through a Partnership between Limerick City Sports Partnership, BDO Get Back Challenge and Limerick City Council.
