Press Release

Wednesday, October 31st 2012

Limerick’s iconic Thomond Park Stadium will be the venue for a glittering Oscars Style ceremony this Saturday night, November 3rd, for the annual Pride of Place competition.

More than 500 people from towns and villages throughout Ireland will attend the awards ceremony to celebrate community contributions to local society and the creation of civic pride in an event jointly hosted by Limerick City and County Councils and sponsored by IPB Insurance.

Pride of Place is an initiative of the local authority all-Ireland Steering Forum run by Co-Operation Ireland, a charity which has been involved in promoting peace-building activities North and South for the last 30 years.  This is the tenth year of the Pride of Place competition which has enjoyed tremendous success and continues to grow in terms of prestige and popularity.

Manager of Limerick Local Authorities, Conn Murray, said the Pride of Place competition is all about appreciating the extraordinary work being carried out by communities all over the country.

“It is recognition of the work being done up and down the country by local communities and celebrating what working together can achieve,” said Mr Murray. “It also highlights the role and commitment of local authorities in supporting groups who take on initiatives to improve their communities, and it’s outstanding that around 100 entries from cities, towns and villages throughout the island of Ireland will be represented in Limerick this weekend.

He added: “Thomond Park Stadium is a truly wonderful venue and Limerick is delighted to be hosting such a prestigious night. I would like to wish all the communities and groups participating in the 2012 competition the very best of luck. Although there can only be one winner in each category, I congratulate you all for being nominated and for continuing to create and promote pride in your communities.”

The winners in each competition category will receive an exclusive crystal memento along with a monetary prize. Runners up will receive a framed certificate and a monetary prize while the recipients of special awards receive a crystal memento.

Judging in this year’s competition took place countrywide last August and 50 Awards will be presented on the night.
