National Day of Commemoration Ceremony to take place in Limerick

Limerick will host for the first time a Day of Commemoration Ceremony on Sunday, July 10th to honour all Irish men and Irish women who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations.

Members of the public are invited to attend the ceremony which will take place in the open area behind City Hall on Merchant’s Quay at 11.30am on Sunday, July 10th.  

Limerick is hosting this event as 2011 is the 25th anniversary of the first such ceremony which is held annually at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin. This year, regional ceremonies will also be held in five other locations across the country, i.e. Cork, Sligo, Galway, Kilkenny and Waterford.

Representatives of the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Ireland, the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches, the Jewish Community and the Islamic Community will conduct the multi-faith commemoration. This will comprise prayers and readings with responses by those present. Mayor of Limerick, Councillor Jim Long will lay a wreath, a minute’s silence will be observed and the National Flag will be raised.

The 12th Infantry Battalion at Sarsfield Barracks will also participate in the ceremony while the musical element will be provided by The Watch House Cross Community Choir, the Mid West Vocal Academy and the Boherbuoy Band.

The ceremony will last approximately 45 minutes.

People attending the ceremony are advised to attend not later than 15 minutes before the beginning of the ceremony, seating will be limited. Light refreshments will be provided afterwards.
