Statement05.02.13
Limerick City Council is leading a multi-agency 'on-street' investigation into the sale and distribution of household coal in the city.
Over the past few nights, a number of 'bellmen' distributing coal have been interviewed by staff from Limerick City Council and other local authorities as well as Customs officers, and investigating officers from the Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Social Protection.
The selling, marketing, distribution and burning of bituminous ('smoky') coal is an offence in the city and surrounding hinterland.
On foot of these interviews, it is expected that enforcement action will be instigated in a number of cases, by the relevant agency.
