Limerick Route 2: Childers Road

7.3 Route 2: Childers Road

Map of Limerick City Cycle Network

The proposed Childers Road Cycle Route serves the University of Limerick, Plassey Technology Park, the Parkway Shopping Centre, Claughan G.A.A. Club, St Kierans School, Galvone Industrial Estate, Roxborough Swimming Pool, Roxborough Shopping Centre and LEDP Industrial Estate.

It connects the Parkway Roundabout to UL via the old N7 to link up with the new cycle lane at the Groody Bridge at one end and the Parkway Roundabout to Punches Cross and Ballinacurra Road via the Ballysimon Roundabout, Kilmallock Roundabout and Roxborough Roundabout at the other end.

The section from the Parkway Roundabout to the Groody Bridge is to be a 3m mandatory two-way cycle lane constructed along the carriageway of the old N7. The section at Rheboge Road junction is to be advisory. This lane is to link in with a lane that is under construction presently -part of the N7 Re-alignment Contract. At the Parkway Roundabout this lane is to be connected to the pedestrian crossing of the N7 on the city side of the roundabout.

The section of Childers Road from the Parkway Roundabout to the Ballysimon Roundabout contains a considerable amount of green space on either side of the carriageway. The footpath on the Norwood Park side of the road is an average width of 2.15m. There is a section approximately 30m in length, which is in poor condition due to cracking and subsidence. It is proposed to widen this footpath to 4m and make it a shared use pedestrian and cyclist path. The pedestrian footpath is to be 1.5m wide and the cycle path, which is two-way, is to be 2.5m wide. A pedestrian crossing is to be provided to cross the N24 Tipperary Road on the city side of the Ballysimon Roundabout. In front of the Parkway Shopping Centre it is proposed to make the existing footpath a shared use pedestrian/cycle path.

The section of Childers Road from the Ballysimon Roundabout to the Kilmallock Roundabout contains a considerable amount of green space on the city side of the road. The average width of the footpath is 1.6m. It is proposed to widen this footpath to 4m and make it a shared use pedestrian /cycle path .The pedestrian footpath is to be 1.5m wide and the cycle path which is to be two-way is to be 2.5m wide. A pedestrian crossing is to be erected on the Kilmallock Road on the city side of the Kilmallock Roundabout.

The section of carriageway along Childers Road from the Kilmallock Roundabout to Roxborough Roundabout varies in width from 9.2m to 12m. It is proposed to construct on-road cycle tracks as the green area adjacent to the road is sloping back to the fence and would require extensive work. A pelican crossing may be erected at the railway bridge beside the Kilmallock Roundabout. A 1.5m wide on-road cycle track is to be constructed on the city centre side of the carriageway. On the county side a 1.5m wide cycle path is to be constructed on the green area inside the existing fence. The existing fence will moved back 3-4m. The on-road cycle track will be terminated just before the pedestrian crossing at St. Kierans School where the track will be taken onto the footpath at either side of the road. Two pedestrian crossings may be erected one on the city side and the other on the county side of the Roxborough Roundabout.

The section of Childers Road from Roxborough Roundabout to John Carew Park Link Road has a wide footpath and green area on both sides of the road. A shared use pedestrian/cycle path is to be constructed on both sides of the road. The two existing footpaths will be widened as they vary in width from 1.7m to 2m. These footpaths will be extended to 3.5m on either side.

The section of Childers Road from the Junction with John Carew Park Link Road to the Junction with Greenfields Road has a wide footpath and green area on both sides of the carriageway so the cycle tracks should continue as shared use pedestrian/cyclist extending the footpath to 3m where necessary. On the city side of Childers Road along Sycamore Ave a 1.5m advisory on-road cycle track is to be constructed. The track should terminate at the end of this avenue as there is a railway crossing of Childers Road at this point and the footpath is 2m wide without space to extend. After the railway crossing a 1.5m wide advisory on-road cycle track should be constructed along Garryglass Ave. as far as the green area at the Hyde Ave. Junction. At this point the cycle track should become a shared use pedestrian/cyclist path. The path should be extended to 3m wide. On the county side of Childers Road the existing footpath is to become a shared use pedestrian/cycle path -3m wide as far as Sycamore Ave where the lane will be taken onto the access road and become a 1.5m wide on-road advisory cycle lane. Just before the railway crossing the on-road cycle track will be terminated. A shared use pedestrian/cycle path is to be constructed from where the on-road cycle lane ends as far as the railway crossing. This existing footpath is to be extended to 3m wide. Cyclists may use the existing pedestrian footpaths at the railway crossing but must yield to pedestrians. The cycle lane on the county side of Childers Road should continue as a 1.5m wide on-road advisory cycle lane along the access roads to Griffith Ave. and Greenmont Ave. At the end of the access road the lane will continue on as a shared use pedestrian/cycle lane as far as the junction with Greenfields Road. The existing footpath should be widened to 3m.

From the junction of Greenfields Road to Ballinacurra Road the existing footpath is to become a shared use pedestrian/cycle path on both sides of the road. The footpath on the city side of Childers Road is an average of 3m wide this will accommodate a 1.5m wide cycle lane and a 1.5m wide pedestrian area. On the county side of Childers Road the section of footpath from Greenfields Road to Oakview Drive is approximately 1.9m wide so this footpath will be widened to 3m. From Oakview Drive to Ballinacurra Road the footpath is approximately 3m wide so no rehabilitation work is necessary.

From the junction of Greenfields Road and Childers Road to Punches Cross along Greenfields Road a 1.5m wide advisory on-road cycle lane is to be constructed. There is one-way traffic only on this road moving towards Punches Cross so this lane will be on the same side as LIDL and will connect into a lane running out Ballinacurra Road towards the county.

There are Lamp Standards and Sign Posts to be moved at various locations along this route. Care must also be taken with the on-road cycle lane to ensure that ironwork on the road is not hazardous if it lies within a cycle lane. There is adequate public lighting along this route.
