Limerick Route 7: Raheen to City Centre

7.8 Route 7: Raheen to City Centre

Map of Limerick City Cycle Network

The proposed Raheen-City Centre cycle route serves Raheen, Dooradoyle (Crescent Shopping Centre, Regional Hospital) Mary Immaculate College, Scoil Mathair De, and Scoil Carmel.

It commences outbound along Ballinacurra Road from Punches Cross towards the City Boundary at Ballinacurra Bridge. The inbound lane runs from the city boundary inbound along South Circular Road. There will be a link along Lifford Ave to Ballinacurra Road. This route also connects to the Dock Road via Courtbrack Ave.

The first section along Ballinacurra Road from Punches Cross to the City Boundary is to be a 1.5m wide advisory on-road cycle lane at the edge of the outbound lane. A pelican crossing is to be erected between the junction with the South Circular Road and the City Boundary. A 1.5m wide advisory on-road cycle lane is to be constructed along Lifford Ave to link in with the city centre bound lane on South Circular Road. There is an existing set of Pedestrian Lights at the junction of Lifford Ave and Ballinacurra Road.

An inbound advisory cycle lane 1.5m wide is to be constructed from the city boundary along Ballinacurra Road to the South Circular Road Junction. This lane is then to continue along South Circular Road as a 1.5m wide on-road advisory cycle lane as far as the roundabout at New Street. At the junction of Lifford Ave and South Circular Road a pedestrian crossing is to be erected to link with the cycle lane on Ballinacurra Road. There is a pedestrian crossing on each arm of the roundabout at the New Street junction. From the roundabout at New Street as far as the Redemptorist Church at the Quin Street junction a one-way traffic system is in operation. There is a considerable amount of on-street parking along this section of South Circular Road. Scoil Mathair De is the first school encountered after the roundabout. It is proposed to erect a pedestrian crossing just before the entrance to the school. A section of the on-street parking on the left hand side of the carriageway (facing city centre) is to be removed and a 1.5m mandatory on-road cycle lane is to be constructed. This cycle lane is to terminate at the pedestrian crossing at Scoil Mathair De. From the pedestrian crossing the lane will continue on the right hand side of South Circular Road (facing city centre) as a 1.5m wide on-road advisory cycle lane. On the city centre side of the junction with Prospect Ave the carriageway width reduces to approximately 2.85m for a section as far as the Redemptorist Church. The 1.5m wide advisory on-road cycle lane will continue along this section as far as the junction with Quin Street where it will terminate. A possible future route linking into this section would be along Quin Street as there is on-street parking on one side of the carriageway only. It would also link back to the route at Punches Cross via O'Connell Avenue.

A cycle lane linking the South Circular Road to the Dock Road via Courtbrack Ave is to be constructed. From the South Circular Road Junction to the roundabout at Allendale the lane approaching the Dock Road is to be a 1.5m on-road advisory cycle lane. The lane going in the opposite direction is to be constructed along the old road running parallel to Courtbrack Ave as a 1.5m wide advisory on-road cycle lane. At Allendale Roundabout the lanes are to diverge and the footpaths on either side of the road are to be extended and become shared use for pedestrians and cyclists. The footpaths on both sides of Courtbrack Ave vary in width from 1m to 1.5m. These footpaths are to be extended by 1.5m on either side and will terminate at the junction with the Dock Road. A pedestrian crossing is to be erected at the roundabout at Allendale.
