7.10 Route 9: O' Callaghan Strand/ Clancy Strand

Map of Limerick City Cycle Network

The proposed O'Callaghan Strand/Clancy Strand cycle route will serve locations between the Shannon Bridge and Thomond Bridge. The carriageway at the North Circular Road end of O'Callaghan Strand is 9.6m wide with footpaths at either side of this carriageway 2.4m and 1.9m wide respectively. It is proposed to construct a 1.5m wide advisory on-road cycle lane on either side of the carriageway. Just before the junction with Stonetown Terrace the carriageway width increases to 13m and then 15.8m at the junction itself. It is proposed to to continue with the 1.5m on-road advisory cycle lanes. Between the junction of Stonetown Terrace and the junction of Strandville Gardens there is on-street parking on both sides of the road. It is proposed to remove the on-street parking on the Stonetown Terrace side of the carriageway. A 0.7m wide buffer zone is to be constructed on outside the parking bay on the opposite side of the road. It is proposed to continue with the construction of 1.5m on-road advisory cycle lanes along this as far as the Ennis Road Junction. At this junction it is proposed to construct advanced stop lines on the O'Callaghan Strand approach and on the Clancy Strand approach.

There is on-street parking on Clancy Strand on the same side of the carriageway as the river. A buffer zone of 0.7m is to be constructed beside this parking area. The average width of the carriageway is 9m excluding the width of the parking bay. It is proposed to construct a 1.5m wide on-road advisory cycle lane on either side of the carriageway.

This cycle route will link into the Caherdavin to UL cycle route at this junction, it may be necessary to construct a pelican crossing to take cyclists across the carriageway to link in with the inbound lane.
